The burden of
paying for college is a worry of almost all college students and parents are
struggling with. Not only are there the rates for tuition, room and board, but
college is extended to about five and a half years to graduate. Colleges are
offering an incentive to put the worry aside and sign up for college because
they can guarantee they will pay for any tuition money needed to graduate after
four years is spent there.
This appetizing offer has boosted
the applications for colleges as well as enrollment of freshman classes. More
people are feeling comfortable with the costs of colleges because the comfort of
financial help.
Although this brings in many
applicants, this deal has strict requirements that weed about a large percentage
of people who believed they could receive it. Part of the reason college is
extended longer is because of students switching their major. However, if you
switch your major, you are no longer in the running for this aid. Also, you will
be put through class times that may not be convenient as well as achieving 30
credits per year.
This marketing strategy makes
college seem very appealing for many people, but the requirements are meant to
disqualify many applicants which makes this offer not helpful to the majority of
the students.
Michelle, I really enjoyed your take on this article. I think as seniors we can all relate to this in the sense that we’re all going to college, and most of us cannot pay in full right away. Sometimes I think it’s sad that college comes down not to dreams and academic potential, but rather wherever meets your financial means. I think it’s pretty interesting how much education and economics clash. Because the government cannot spend/give out as much money in grants (due to recent economic crisis’), I think more people are applying and seeking out private schools as well. I think as students, some cannot reach their full potential because of financial circumstances. This is discouraging because we all want to overcome and reach our full potential. Although money is a necessity in life, I think we can still be prosperous wherever we go as long as we try and put the effort!
