Up In Smoke

By Tylor Wenzel

Tobacco, the main reason our country is standing here today, and the reason our country is still continuing to be a success story to this very day. As the carcinogens are being inhaled by our fellow high school students, faculty, and residents of mother Earth; our economy is being fueled with each ignition of the substance. Sure, the majority of the smokers will lead dreadfully dull, and meaningless lives and on top of that cut down their life span substantially whilst looking disgusting at the same time but that’s called enterprise! But take the bad with the good, and we get reduced taxes and more jobs for the working man because of this. See, tobacco is widely known as the destructive substance that people enjoy taking in a chain-like pattern, but tobacco companies are also paying fat and when I say fat, I mean fat -- taxes. These taxes which the tobacco companies pay are overall reducing the taxes you pay as an individual or whatever you might want to classify yourself as. From 1998 to present, tobacco companies have paid our federal government and local ones as well nearly $484.6 Billion in taxes. On top of providing jobs to farmers for the  growing of tobacco, illegals/unfortunates to harvest/trim product, and cigarette smuggling for entrepreneurs -- the tobacco industry is also helping out the medical industry! Why do you think there is over a 20% increase in medical-field jobs projected for 2020? It’s because tobacco users are committing self-harm like how a mental patient self mutilates their wrists and with harm to the health comes treatment and with treatment follows money. So, the tobacco industry is helping out all those little poor souls wishing to take the easy route out and take up the profession of a Nurse -- which is a majority of PHS. Inevitably, all smokers will have wrinkly faces, yellow teeth/nails, nasty hair, sad lives, and I’ll be profiting off them with the rest of America.

  2. Tylor,

Indeed, smoking-related illnesses increase demand for healthcare services. Although nurses benefit from this increase in demand, I know people who would argue against your statement that nursing is an "easy route". (My mother was a nurse.) Furthermore, what data do you have to back your claim that the majority of PHS students are going into nursing?

  3. Well then, you put up a lot for debate and fight! Bringing up the topic of how tobacco benefits health care it really doesn't seem as though it would because the only way it would is if that person ends up with cancer and really the health care professionals dont make the money the pharmaceutical companies make the money by selling the drugs to battle what has happened to those smokers. Along with that note nursing isn't an easy route, its a route people take because it's something that they want to do, HELP PEOPLE. Most people anyways in Pewaukee actually end up going to UWW and pursue business. (side note)

  4. I thought it was interesting how you brought up the good that cigarettes have for our economy even though they are widely regarded as very harmful. While I do agree that the "fat" cigarettes give our country are extremely beneficial and without them our nation would suffer in other ways that are not as voluntary as buying a pack of cigarettes, I still cannot get past the detrimental effects that cigarettes have on human heath. It not only destroys the lungs of the smoker, but the people around them as well. Also, the ugly cigarette butts fill up the sides of streets, parking lots, parks, and other public places; this mutilates the true beauty that our planet has. So, while this addiction may be beneficial for our nation's economy, I don't believe it is worth the loss of heath and environment.

  6. In response to the post, great job! You have a lot of facts to back up your argument which is always needed for a strong argumentative piece. Now in response to the videos you've posted, it's ridiculous that our government would allow promoting such a bad product that can cause many health problems. Those videos made smoking look like such a joy, it's actually pretty funny to watch it.
