Apple v. Android

Cal Condon

For most people in America, smartphone products are placed high on want lists. Technology is something everyone feels the need to keep up with. Apple is all about technology and staying modern, so people never lose interest in its products, they might add a product to be touch screen or add games for  another age group to enjoy products. Although the main debate in the cell phone business is Apple vs.  Android. In terms of numbers, Apple's App Store has earned about $4.9 billion in gross revenue for paid apps, while the Android Marketplace is estimated to have earned just $330 million in that market. Apple is beating Android in this area, primarily because of its overwhelming success in the paid apps market. While this is promising for apple, for the consumer not so much while Android offers many more free apps. Although androids apps are cheaper, it is said Apple has produced a much more organized app menu and is clearly easier to navigate. One huge aspect Apple has over Android is its innovative difference from any other brand. In terms of numbers, Apple's App Store has earned about $4.9 billion in gross revenue for paid apps, while the Android Marketplace is estimated to have earned just $330 million in that market. Apple is beating Android in this area, primarily because of its overwhelming success in the paid apps market.

As you can see in the graph above android is predicted to overtake apple in unit shipments. While many people believe apple is demolishing android in sales, I disagree. Android is big in tablets. The problem is that no one has a clue how big it is. While Apple happily reports its rising unit sales for tablets, Samsung and other major Android distributors are silent. Android leaves us in the dark as to just how many tablets are being bought and used.

According to The Economic Times, In a lawsuit, Apple is seeking about $2 billion in damages from Samsung for selling phones and tablets that Apple says violate five of its mobile software patents. Samsung, meanwhile, says Apple violated two of its patents. As you can see the debate is real, and very heated. Both sides are heavy competitors which is great for technology because both will be pushing each other to improve.

Android is in no doubt growing rapidly, and winning the smartphone phone marketshare. One question many wonder is will android ever catch up to apple in total downloads? Does this declare the winner of who's better? Apple is still the leader in revenues, with this trend likely to continue for the future. However, the battle between the companies is only beginning and many surprises will unfold in the coming years

  1. After reading your blog post I learned many things about android phones that I had not known before. For instance I had no clue that Apple and Android were so close with the amount of sales they are making. Although Apple is pulling in a greater revenue due to the app sales, I feel as though Android will catch up faster than Apple producers ever thought due to the amount of tablets they are selling and not letting any other companies know about. This article brought great insight as to how much Apple and Android are working against each other to create a better product and bring in the most amount of revenue.

  2. From the very beginning, I have always been an Android fan. From the features to the amount of change that android can handle, I love their operating system. The reason I believe that more people love Apple products is either the craze created with the release of the new iPhone or the amount of tech savviness a person is. The more a person likes to learn the phone and mess around with the settings, and truly customize their phone to be their own, the more they love Android. For instance, on one of my previous phones, I was able to have both an apple-like iOS running on my phone as well as the normal Android system in Jelly Bean. Also I want to see what exactly the iPhone will do next to keep up with its Windows and Android counterparts, because I believe the iPhone 6 needs to have brand new technology never before seen, otherwise it will be the beginning of the end.

  3. There is no doubt that Apple and Android smart phones dominate the cell phone market. But the real controversy is whether Apple or Android has the upper hand in terms of sales. Although Apple has the upper hand in terms of app store sales, but Android has the upper hand in terms of free sales. Android will be able to overtake because they will overpower the technology of Apple. Because Apple only increases their technology just a little bit every year, Android goes all out in terms of updates, Android will become the most popular in the future while Apple will have a setback because they don’t increase the technology very much from year to year.

  4. Very interesting post Cal, I thought that Android would be almost as equal to Apple I guess not. I think that Android should step up their game and start to take competition more seriously with other companies. All though Android is a great services, and they sell excellent products. By thinking of new ideas and more advance things that is added that could help of their company majorly. It will attract more costumers just as what apple did. I think that it's important for competition because then it helps out with the economy.

  5. I agree with the fact that apples app store is easier to navigate then android because when I had my android product I never got any apps because I always had trouble finding them. That was one of the regions I wanted to get a iPhone because I already new how the app store worked form having a IPod. Wither you get an apple or android I think is what you grow up with. If you grow up with a iPod you're going to want the iPhone because your more use to it and if you grow up with a Samsung mp3 or a mp3 that uses android player you're going to want an android phone.

  6. Personally I like Apple better, there is more app choices on the iPhone and they also run faster. Although Apple doesn't have as many free apps, they have a much larger selection. Apple just keeps coming out with more new products with new features and that's what makes people go crazy for the product and people want it because that's what everyone has. As for the future Windows phones might increase in popularity and that will affect Androids and Apple negatively.

  7. I own an android and have always chose that over the iPhone simply because it can do all the things an iPhone can do and more. They iPhone craze I believe has more to do with model and brand than it does technology. However, soon I am switching to iPhone - not because I don't like the android but because the iPhone keeps coming out with more products for their models. But with new features of the windows phone that may be surpassing both the android and the iPhone. We'll see what happens I guess.

  8. I have always been a Pro Android person, favoring the android products over those created by Apple. While I do agree that Apple does have an easy to navigate app store the phone itself does hold much customization capabilities. Yet the reason people keep going for Apple products is due to the fact that they come out with a new phone or product almost every year and because everyone has one. Apple products are a trend. Seeing as Android products can be customized on a personal level far more than any Apple product I feel as though the want for an iPhone will decrease -- as the technology is also repetitive -- and Android will have an increase in sales.

  9. Apple is not only competing with android companies but also companies like US cellular and T-mobile who have recently begun to sell Iphones to their customers. This proves to be dangerous to apple because they are losing money due to the fact that so many companies are selling apple products

  10. I'd like to take a wider look to this topic at hand. As of right now Apple is still the bigger company overall, but even though I'm very into Apple, I can recognize that Android is doing just fine. The reason I say that is because even if sometime in the future Android becomes the bigger company, Apple isn't just thrown out the window. Big companies are not the only ones that survive so in the long run, the question is not of who will end up making more money or who will come out on top, because both of these companies have long futures ahead and they will both be major contributors to the development of technology. With that said, the question therefore becomes who will pave the way faster and better?

  11. Ever since I got my first phone back in 2012, I knew I would never look at Apple again. Even though I never used an Apple product, I find Android to be much more fulfilling, customizable and the more complex OS than Apple’s OS. This is just my personal opinion. Some people will go against me saying that Apple has a better ecosystem because of their history and large selection of apps. When it comes to which is better, no one wins, it’s all down to personal preference. Regarding the Windows Mobile OS, I truly believe Windows can come back. What a lot of people did not realize is that out of the top 3 operating systems shown, Windows is the oldest. Windows was operating for a long time way before Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. It is just that since the new redesign of Windows OS, many people did not take kindly to the change. Still, I believe Windows will once again have a period to shine. Apples is clearly dominating in terms of revenue and it doesn’t seem like Android close behind, but in a couple of years, this competition could be very close. I believe Android, with all of their unique features and plethora of smartphone manufacturer’s that use Google’s operating system will grow faster than Apple’s products. I could be wrong, but by looking at the graph, it could be likely. Apple should step up their game and give us some impressive announcements at the World Wide Developers Conference in June if they want to start getting more money.

  12. In my opinion, i prefer apple over android. For me i like the better apps and some of the complements that come with having an iPhone. It is interesting though to see how close in competition Android and Apple products are. However, i feel a lot of people gravitate towards the apple products specifically for the name brand of their products, because apple is the bigger company, and have set a trend for so long. If Apple keeps their game up, and continues to come up with more upgrades and gadgets for their phones, i think they can still manage to hold ahead of the competition with Androids.

  13. I have always been a big Apple user and have always thought their products were better than Androids and Windows phones because they have more apps and a variety of products. It's not really a shock to me to see this data because of close competition between Android and Apple over the years. I feel like more people tend to go with Apple though because it's more advertised and has had a popular trend of products for so long. Apple will probably continue to rule the cellphone world as long as they keep up with new products, apps and updates.
